The CLE will cover the Canadian legal system and admissibility issues for clients with pending criminal charges or convictions. Canadian Attorney Sam Hyman will share practice points for mitigating admissibility issues and strategies for rehabilitation or re-entry post conviction. The ethics hour will cover collateral consequences of convictions beyond Canada such as employment disqualification, loss of student loans, public housing ineligibility, loss of federal benefits, involuntary termination of parental rights and much more.

  • Can I Still Go To Canada? — Washington Convictions That Trigger Inadmissibility and Resolutions That May Keep the Border Open for Your Client
    Sam Hyman of the Vancouver, B.C. firm Burns Fitzpatrick will review Canadian law and equivalency with Washington State law. He will review the provisions of Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act as it applies to criminal convictions. He will outline ways to overcome the consequences of inadmissibility such as record suspension, rehabilitation and Temporary Resident Permits.
  • Ethics: Collateral Consequences of Conviction — Canada and Beyond
    Seattle attorney Sheryl Pewitt will provide an in-depth review of the ethical considerations and collateral consequences of a criminal conviction including employment issues, eligiblity for public benefits, family consequences such as parental rights, citizenship and immigation, and other civil rights and privileges.
